Walter the Rooster

Well here's our adopted rooster... not exactly what you have in mind when you think of a rooster, is he? We're getting used to each other lately... he doesn't peck me near as much as he used to. A friend of mine that saw him for the first time last week kept asking me,
"what's wrong with him?". Gramps calls him the rooster from the movie Pet Cemetery. He adds a little comical humor to the chicken yard. He's as sweet as can be to our 2 year old hen, Vinny. We'll see how he is with the 3 month olds that I recently introduced to the yard. He did peck at one this morning. Just keeping the teenagers in line I suppose.

Check out Walter's crow... he gets a bit of laryngitis at the end:

Bad News on the Farm

FOUR, count that... 4 of our teenage chickens disappeared. I don't know if it was dogs or hawks or raccoons or what. There was no evidence of foul play (carcasses or loose feathers). They just disappeared. What a bummer. So, we lost two Barred Rocks and our two fancy Cochins.

Our teeny boppers and fuzzy butts part two

Here are the pics of our teenager chicks. They're probably about 8 weeks old. There are 4 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 2 Cochins.

A glimpse inside our new roosting house. We also have a laying house.

Our new chicken yard.

Below are pics of our wee little ones, about a month old.
How does the time fly so fast?
Why did the chicken cross the road when there was a Tonka Truck coming?

Coming soon!!! We adopted a rooster! He's a funny looking guy so the camera will be on him soon.

Chicken Fights

What are these little ones doing running around like chickens with their heads cut off?

Fighting over pincher bugs, that's what!

It's fun to watch but I will surely be on PETA's hit list this week...
See a blog theme going on here?

Got my chicks!

Jason delivered on my birthday present... I got some itty bitty chicks and some teenager chicks. Below are photos of the teeny ones... soon I will post photos of the girls currently in that "awkward stage"... they are a little camera shy.

Here are the babes... 4 Rhode Island Reds and 5 Plymouth Barred Rocks.
They're chilling out on Zack's bed... looks kind of spacey in there, a little out of their element.
The one on the left is "Vince". There is also a Barred Rock named Vincenzo,
and two B.R.'s named after Zachary.
Not sure if this is Vincenzo or one of the Zachary's or a poor little no-name.

Vince visiting the city.
Vincent hasn't been this excited since we got the wii!
His God-parents suggested looking into 4-H. I think that's a good idea.

Chicken and Eggs Update

We have a second egg source! Vinny is laying now, here she is!

There was also a mystery egg today... perhaps a faulty Zacky egg since we didn't get one from her today. Apparently the shell didn't form.

Our First Egg!!!

This morning I discovered our first egg! I don't know who the mother hen is, either the big white Zacky or petite brown Vinny. Here's Vincent showing off the egg and some updated pics of the girls. I'll have to post a Vinny pic at a later date.

FUZZY BUTTS

These are the chicks when we first got them. They are much bigger and uglier now, especially the yellow one. We also have two black and white chicks now too.

"I don't know how to pick up chicks!"

"I don't know how to pick up chicks!" Ok, so that's what Vincent said after he asked for some help picking up our new baby chicks. It was just something else... well, these chicks came as a surprise for us from our friend down the street, Ann. We (I) have been dreaming of a chicken coop and a couple fluffy chics now and then for a while. We even went to a farm earlier today and saw a cool coop design that I took pics of. Farm details will come in a post tomorrow... Anyways, Ann's gift was like a souvenir of our day, but not from where we went. :)

Introducing...
